Austin Dean Recruitment is seeking an experienced SEN Assessment & Review Officer to join Children’s Services. This is a critical role working with senior staff across schools, ensuring compliance with the Children and Families Act 2014 and delivering positive outcomes for children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with senior staff at schools to ensure the Local Authority (LA) meets all legal SEND requirements.
  • Implement and coordinate the needs assessment and review process in line with the SEN Code of Practice 2015.
  • Develop aspirational, holistic, and outcome-focused Education, Health, and Care (EHC) Plans.
  • Manage a complex caseload, responding to the evolving needs of SEND children and young people.
  • Challenge and support schools, professionals, and families to reduce the risk of legal challenges against the LA.
  • Oversee and manage the work of a case coordinator, allocating and monitoring tasks daily.

Experience and Knowledge Required

  • Good general education equivalent to ‘A’ Level, including GCSE English.
  • Experience with SEND processes in a local authority and drafting EHC Plans or statements of special educational needs.
  • Experience of working directly with educational establishments such as nurseries, schools or colleges
  • Understanding of SEND reforms and relevant legislation, including the Education Act 1996, Children and Families Act 2014, and the SEN Code of Practice 2015.

  • Excellent communication skills to engage effectively with parents, young people, schools, and professionals.

  • Ability to prioritise workloads, maintain accurate records, and demonstrate resilience under pressure.
