About the Role

We are seeking a highly motivated Consultant Old Age Psychiatrist to join our clients NHS Trust to work in a 20-bedded mixed-sex functional inpatient unit. This is a 10 PA post that combines clinical leadership with delivering high-quality care for older adults with complex mental health needs.

The Consultant Psychiatrist will work collaboratively with the Multi-Professional Approved Clinician (MPAC) and a co-Consultant Psychiatrist to share responsibility for nine patients. They will provide clinical and medical leadership, oversee patient care, and ensure the ward maintains a high standard of evidence-based treatment and recovery-focused support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Clinical Leadership:
    • Oversee the assessment and treatment of patients, ensuring recovery-focused, evidence-based care.
    • Provide clinical leadership to the multidisciplinary team (MDT) and collaborate on treatment plans.
    • Attend MDT meetings, including the ‘Red, Amber, Green’ system reviews, which evaluate patient progress, risks, and discharge planning.
  • Patient Care:
    • Review new admissions to determine a holistic treatment strategy and monitor progress through regular reviews.
    • Attend relevant patient meetings, such as Admission/Discharge Planning Meetings, CPAs, and maintain strong communication with families and carers.
    • Assess and treat patients in line with evidence-based clinical practice, adhering to the Trust’s clinical pathways and governance procedures.
    • Model good prescribing practices for older adults, following national guidance.
  • Legislative Responsibilities:
    • Maintain familiarity with key legislation affecting older adults with mental illness, including the Mental Health Act 1983 and its Code of Practice.
    • Share responsibilities for duties under the Act, such as working with the SOAD service and preparing for and attending Mental Health Tribunals.
    • Prioritise Mental Health Act Assessments for ward patients during working hours.
    • Occasionally prepare Section 49 Mental Capacity Act reports, shared evenly among the consultant body.

Multi-Professional Approved Clinician (MPAC) Role

The MPAC collaborates with the Consultant Psychiatrist to ensure holistic care. Specific MPAC powers include:

  • Holding powers under section 5(2).
  • Completion of Section 17 and 23 forms.
  • Application for a Community Treatment Order (CTO).

Exceptions: Initial recommendations for detention under Sections 2 and 3 and management of treatments outside MPAC qualifications or competencies (e.g., certain medications).

Candidate Requirements

  • GMC registration with a license to practice in the UK.
  • Inclusion on the Specialist Register in Old Age Psychiatry or within six months of achieving CCT.
  • Demonstrated clinical expertise in functional disorders in older adults.
  • Familiarity with relevant mental health legislation.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and multidisciplinary team collaboration skills.
