We are currently seeking to recruit a substantive Consultant Gastroenterologist to join our clients team in North Wales.

The salary for this position ranges from £106,000 to £154,760 per annum, based on a 10-session per week contract. The salary will be determined in accordance with applicable terms and conditions, considering the applicant’s prior experience at the consultant grade. Our client will will only consider applicants who hold GMC specialist registration in gastroenterology.

We are appointing two consultant gastroenterologists to the NHS Hospital. The recruitment is both for replacement and expansion of the department to support specialist areas (particularly ERCP, hepatology and nutrition) and the introduction of a formal out of hours networked gastrointestinal bleed service. They will join a team of two consultant gastroenterologists (including one locum at present), 1 StR, 1 Clinical Fellow, 2 IMT or equivalent, 1 FY2 and 2 FY1.  The department of medicine provides ward based care, the gastroenterology firm based on ward 9 which was refurbished as part of the hospital redevelopment programme. 

The Gastroenterology medical team consists of three consultant gastroenterologists, 1 StR (Wales Deanery), 1 Clinical Fellow, 2 SHOs, 1 FY2 and 2 FY1.   The department of medicine provides ward based care with the gastroenterology firm based on ward 9, which has recently been refurbished as part of the hospital redevelopment programme.  This is a 24 bedded ward including 8 single rooms, meeting the IBD standards.  The department provides outpatient clinics in Glan Clwyd and Colwyn Bay community hospital.  There are weekly nutrition, upper GI and colorectal cancer MDT meetings.  The IBD and Hepatology teams hold their MDTs monthly.  There is a dedicated multidisciplinary nutrition team, upper and lower GI cancer nurse specialists.

The post holders will:

  • Provide, with Consultant colleagues, a service in the speciality of Gastroenterology and General Medicine with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness.
  • Have inpatient beds
  • Have continuing responsibility for the care of patients in their charge in liaison with Consultant colleagues.
  • Undertake professional supervision and management of junior medical staff.
  • Participate in continuing medical education.
  • Be required to participate in and contribute to Clinical Audit in line with BCUHB’s policy on the implementation of Clinical Governance.
  • Cover for consultant colleagues’ periods of leave.
  • Be responsible for patients admitted to a 24 bedded ward shared with the other gastroenterologists.  There will be a twinned system for ward reviews to allow cover for leave.
  • Provide specialty in reach during the week.  Participation in the general medical on call is not expected, although this is available if the post holder wishes to do so. Medical admissions to Glan Clwyd are assessed in the Acute Medical Unit in the newly developed Emergency Quadrant. The take averages approximately 30-40 admissions, though speciality in reach reduces the post take ward round work.   The GIM on call comprises of three ward rounds during 24 hours and the in reach will support the morning round in the shape of a gastroenterologist of the morning with responsibility to assess overnight GI bleeds, perform endoscopy on GI bleeds in the emergency morning slot, see referrals (or delegate appropriately), review new and unwell patients on ward 9.
  • Validate outpatient referrals and endoscopy requests.
  • Undertake outpatient clinics with typically 3 new patients and 8 reviews follow the RCP clinic template of 30 minutes for a new referral and 15 minutes for review.
  • Participate in a formal GI bleed service once established, extending the specialty in reach service to weekend mornings to support the medical take. 
  • Provide backfill to certain endoscopy lists as outlined in the job plan
  • Develop subspecialty interests though will manage general gastroenterology patients, and provide the expertise required of consultant physicians with dual accreditation in gastroenterology and general medicine in a district general hospital to see gastroenterology and general medical inpatients.

All consultants are expected to participate in regular medical audit and clinical governance arrangements within the Health Board.

This post is available on a substantive, permanent basis and will be appointed under the terms and conditions of the Welsh Consultant Contract. Candidates must have a CCT in gastroenterology (or be within six months of obtaining it on interview date). Informal Visits can be arranged.
